Review by Brian Harris

Meet The Bullions, they’re your typical backwoods, inbred psychopathic cannibal freaks! The twisted clan consists of Papa Elvis, Butternut, Hubcap, Sno Cakes, Gramma and, the baby of the house, Beefteena! The Bullions are gearing up for a rip-roarin’ good time as “little” Beefteena’s birthday approaches and she decides to give her lifelong dream of being a model a shot! Fashion never looked so good!

Folks, I’m a big fan of Alan Rowe Kelly, and his work, but The Blood Shed really didn’t ring my bell. It’s bound to happen though. I suppose my biggest problem with the movie was the plot and story were almost non-existent, there really just wasn’t much there. I constantly found myself wondering where the film was going and by the time I got to where it was going I kept wondering if there was anything else.

The acting on display was decent; it appeared to me all the actors handed in their best performances so I really can’t complain too much. When you’re working on a shoestring budget you just have to make due with what you have and Kelly did a good job of it. The characters were all pretty funny but Alan Rowe Kelly stole his own show as Beefteena Bullion. I laughed myself silly and continued laughing throughout the day after witnessing Kelly’s Beefteena mugging for the fashion photographer’s set. One hilarious performance and several goofy ones does not make a solid movie though.

The Blood Shed is a trippy amalgamation of backwoods inbred horror and John Waters camp and it effectively delivers that camp by the coffin but I couldn’t get past that feeling of pointlessness I often experience when watching a low budget film that needed a bit more script work.

The Blood Shed is certainly not going to be for everybody. If you’re picky about what you view or overly critical of low budget filmmaking it’s very doubtful this will appeal to you. I have found this to be warmly received by fans of camp and gore and if that’s the audience that has embraced this wonky little incestuous romp, so be it. I wouldn’t recommend purchasing this though until you’ve had a chance to rent first.

“If John Waters had directed The Texas Chainsaw Massacre the end result might have been The Blood Shed!”
