Review by Annie Riordan

Nate has never forgiven himself for the death of his beloved three year old daughter, KC. Distracted by a pretty, flirty young mother, KC was abducted and slain by a predator before Nate even noticed she was missing. The months have gone by and Nate is a shell of what he used to be, distanced from his wife Addy and taking no joy in life...except when it comes to extreme sports. Nate, Addy and Addy’s brother Jay love going where they shouldn’t go and exploring places where access is forbidden. Now the trio is off to Moscow to explore the sealed up underground, where the ancient torture chambers of Ivan The Terrible lay in ruins and the radiation levels are dangerously high. But this particular trip will be unlike any Nate has ever taken before,

Sounds like a rip off of The Descent, right? Well, maybe a little around the edges. Throw in some Jacob’s Ladder and just a touch of Creep and you’ll have this astonishingly unique mindfucker of a movie, which thrusts you into the depths of despair and never offers you one single moment of comedy reprieve. Add in some blinding visuals, a dirty green color scheme and a soundtrack by The Crystal Method and you’ll swear you’re having the worst acid trip you ever took. It’s not gory, it’s not sexy and much of it is filmed on a handheld camera which will leave you feeling nauseous as well as suicidally depressed. Also, star Daniel Caltagirone bears a remarkable resemblance to Robert Carlyle which raises the watchability factor quite a bit! Nate may be a shaky, sweaty wreck of a man, but damn he’s hot!

After... cannot escape from some moments of predictability and it’s not too hard to figure out where it’s going, but it’s definitely not what you think it is...not at first, anyway. Tired of the sequels, the slashers, the remakes and the recycling? Then check out After... It’s different, original and darkly familiar all at once. This is one of the better low budget, indie efforts I’ve seen in a while.
