Tony Stark is the head of Stark Industries the world’s
leading weapons manufacturer. On a trip to Afghanistan to
demonstrate his latest weapon, the missile Jericho, his
convoy is ambushed and Stark is taken hostage. There his
captors demand he build them a replica of The Jericho
missile, but he has other plans. Now armed with the
knowledge that his company is selling to both sides, he
plans to right all the wrongs, but to do so he has to
escape. Using a technology called arc technology to help
keep him alive he creates a suit of iron. When he returns
home he shuts down all weapons manufacturing, but long time
partner Obidiah Stane has other ideas. Stark must now become
what his heart now tells him is right and stop Stane from
building an army of iron monsters.
Talk about high expectations. Based on advance word of
mouth, previews and the trailer, I haven’t walked into a
movie expecting so much in a long time. While this movie
isn’t the superhero movie to end all superhero movies, Iron
Man is a different type of movie. Sure there are plenty of
effects and fight scenes, but the first of two movies that
Marvel is producing themselves this year feels a bit more
mature. I’d imagine that has a lot to do with the casting of
Robert Downey Jr. He isn’t exactly the prototypical
selection to help endear one of Marvel’s most enduring
figures to the viewing public, but really he is possibly the
only guy who actually should portray Stark. Some of the
other casting seemed like it was make up casting. The
bigwigs gave them Downey, so now they have to bring in some
names, so we are given Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Terrence
Howard as Jim Rhodes and while neither did poorly they
really just were too big for the part. My only guess would
be since both characters have bigger parts to play in the
Iron Man universe, they wanted to attach bigger names in
case they were used for potential sequels. |

Easily one of the
best super hero movies made. I don’t think it will have the
wide spread appeal or box office numbers that X-Men or
Spiderman did and I doubt it will get the critical praise
that the newest Batman entry received, but it is more than
worth the time to see it. Armed with an unexpected sense of
humor and a great sound track, Iron Man could easily be one
of the best movies of the summer.
