Review by Brian Harris
After witnessing the brutal murder of their parents by an
faceless intruder, Laura and Henry develop an uncontrollable
fear of the boogeyman. Years later, Henry is released from a
mental health institution with a clean bill of mental health
but his sister, still fearful of the mythological monster
man, is now in need of a little psychological evaluation
herself so she checks herself into the same clinic.
Instead of finding help for her affliction though, bodies
begin dropping and she’s lead to believe the boogeyman is
indeed real and he’s come to finish her off. One by one the
patients begin meeting horrible fates and it’s up to Laura
to find a way out of the hospital ward before he gets her
too!
Boogeyman 2 was actually a pretty decent film and a
reasonably admirable effort by first-time director
Betancourt but I think fans of the first Boogeyman, if there
are any, may be a bit disappointed. For starters, this isn’t
a supernatural horror flick but rather a slasher film in
disguise. Now, I’m sure slasher fans will be overjoyed to
hear this but I was hoping for a real deal spook, not a
psycho in a mask. I was also a bit put off by Tobin Bell’s
presence, which I felt was an obvious red herring cameo.
Tobin Bell, kids trapped, people being murdered according to
the corresponding phobia and a psycho in a mask and
long-hooded robe…hmmm…sound familiar?
The acting, cinematography, score and FX were all solid but
I found it hard to really care about any of the characters.
Apparently, “patients” is interchangeable with “assholes”
because this movie was full of them. Even the lead actress,
the one you’re typically supposed to care about, came off a
bit bitchy and uninteresting. I don’t know, the performances
were all good just not connecting for me. |
