Review by Ted Phipps
In Surrealsville, there’s a strip club with life-sized
dinosaur sculptures and an enormous statue of Godzilla out
back. The owner of the club is in financial trouble and he's
on the brink of losing the club. In desperation, he agrees
to move a little dope on the side as a way to raise some
quick cash. Inside a crate of weed are these mutant spider
things and they escape and start running wild through the
place. I've been to a few strip clubs in my day, and you'll
agree that if the dancers are good enough, then a few
oversized bugs running across your shoes or sharing your
beer probably won't be noticed. The strippers in this place
are not good enough to make you ignore big-ass spiders.
They start biting people and the venom affects people in
various ways. Meek and mild Crystal becomes Rambette the
Avenger, and eventually it's up to her and Buzz the
exterminator to kick spider ass and keep the infestation
from spreading. You won't find many CGI effects here as all
of the monsters and mutations are done with good ol'
fashioned makeup and stop-action modeling. As a long-time
fan of anything done by Ray Harryhausen, this was wonderful
to see and I enjoyed the hell out of it. This Shock-O-Rama
release really shines when it comes to the extras on the
disk. There's one of the best "making of" features that I’ve
ever seen, full of interesting behind-the-scenes information
covering everything from the conception of the film up to
how the various special effects were done. Also included is
a piece titled "How to Crash a Car in Two Minutes" which
explains all the work that went into one of the stunts in
the movie. And much more. It's as if someone said, "Hey,
there's more room on the disk! What else can we put on it?"
I love this kind of background detail stuff, showing just
how much effort goes into even a schlocky movie. My biggest
bitch is that there is no scene-selection menu provided. You
start the movie from the beginning and that's it. |
